Hinge problems frequently begin with a small movement or sound and become expensive when the laptop continues to be opened and closed.

Early symptoms

Watch for clicking, creaking, unusual stiffness, a lifting bezel, movement between the lid and hinge, or a corner of the base separating when the display moves.

Why it becomes worse

The metal hinge can remain intact while its mounting points pull out of the plastic or metal case. Continued movement can damage the display cable, antennas, bezel, lid, palmrest or bottom case.

What to do

Leave the screen in its safest stable position and avoid demonstrating the problem repeatedly. Support the lid during transport and send photos before bringing it in.
