Visible impact damage makes the answer clearer, but an undamaged black display can have several causes.

Signs of panel damage

Cracks, ink-like black patches, coloured vertical lines, distorted areas and image changes when the lid moves commonly point toward the display or cable.

External monitor test

If an external monitor works, the fault is more likely within the laptop display path, but this does not identify the panel by itself. A failed backlight, cable or connector can produce similar symptoms.

No image anywhere

If the laptop shows no image internally or externally and does not complete startup, memory, BIOS, power or motherboard diagnosis may be needed.
